SCRAPPLE & RYE
so you had a little girl and she left you lonely
holed up in your room with the shutters pulled tight
but how many times can you tell the story
starin' down the business end of Saturday night

get it on the good foot down to the city
make a big noise under smoke-stack sky
belly to the counter with a three-dollar bill, y'all'
pushin' down a plateful of scrapple and rye

well, there's just one thing to do, kickin' down hard on the heart-attack
blues

scrapple and rye, scrapple and rye
mopin' around like somebody died
you thought she was the truth til' you caught her in a lie
scrapple and rye, scrapple and rye

sandpaper sally, now she slippin' off the barstool
alligator smile with her hand on your thigh
think you better hit it boy and run like the devil
chokin' down a plateful of scrapple and rye
dirty up your heart get it good and greasy
smokin' like a dope til' it slips into place
shoot your shot now she go down easy
fat boy swingin' don't you fall on your face

two steps up and one step back, kickin' down hard on a heart attack

scrapple and rye, scrapple and rye
mopin' around like somebody died
you thought she was the truth til' you caught her in a lie
scrapple and rye, scrapple and rye
well you can stay out late or you come home early
you dance your little dance til' you sweat it on out
got a line on a fine-steppin' pretty little girly
bet she gonna show you what the fuss is about

five feet thick when you wake up in the morning
bloody bones and a notion in your head
think you gonna make it if you keep on swingin? baby
kickin' them stones out your sad sack bed

just one thing to do, kickin' down hard on the heart-attack blues

scrapple and rye....
'A song about all the grotty things you do to push on through the end of a bad relationship. 'Two steps up and one step back'. Started out as an instrumental, but the lyrics were inspired by the Las Vegas trip in 'Swingers.' A sort of zydeco-funk hybrid. The piano was a scratch track that just wouldn't go away. We recorded the vocal sidechained through Dave Hanbury's guitar amp and juiced it on the verses.
