THE HEART WANTS
darling, let's take a good look around
come and lay here beside me, let your spirit come down
pull the night up around us and let your soul fly free
you're such a young girl, you're an unwritten page
and I've broken your heart with one word out of place
and you've run like a river, spindrifting fast to the sea

i was careless, and i was cold, i was reckless with your soul
now another heart beats for you, and there's nothing more i can do
tell me please baby, can this be true?

the heart wants what it wants, and it don't want me anymore
the heart needs what it needs, and i can see you don't need me anymore

will you walk with me on the wrong side of the tracks?
can i stop a speeding train? is there any going back?
when that ghost whistle blows, i know you're gonna leave me cryin'

i'm not your father, nor your brother or friend
you had that sugar-sweet glitter that came off in my hands
slipped through my fingers and scattered like dust in the light

there's no fool like a fool for love, i've been holding on
i've been sleeping on your doorstep like a vagabond
now i've thrown you my heart so many times
gone on soul-sick, stumbling and blind
you'd think by now, i'd learn to hide my love away
but the heart wants what it wants

now there's no fool like a fool for love, i've been holding on
i've been sleeping on your doorstep like a vagabond
now i've thrown you my heart so many times
gone on soul-sick, stumbling and blind
you'd think by now, i'd learn to hide my love away
but the heart wants what it wants

out of millions of people in this everlovin' world
it's a shame when you hang your heart on one girl
i should be talking to strangers, emptyin' my pockets of you

fairweather valentine, where are you bound?
don't you come calling on me whenever he lets you down
'cause i'm worn out and i know i've done all i can do

i've seen some heavy weather since you've gone
i know it's over and over and done
storms are rollin' and clouds will break
But i won't save me up for your rainy day
blue sky wash over me, take this heartache away

the heart wants what it wants, and it don't want me anymore
the heart needs what it needs, and i can see you don't need me anymore.
'I wrote the chorus a looong time ago. Inspired by Aretha Franklin's 'Drown in My Own Tears.' It's so hard to write simply and from the heart without sounding like a Hallmark card. The instrumental was recorded for 2 months before I had the wherewithal to lock myself in my room and hammer out the lyrics. Sterling's guitar solo is such a non-solo. Perfect. Thanks to John Suchy for doing such a great job recording the organ tracks.
